Granny – aged 90 – told to attend job centre interview
(not satire – it’s social security today!)
If you want an illustration of the mess created by Iain Duncan Smith in our social security system and the incompetence of the present government, you only need to see this letter from the DWP to a 90-year-old woman ordering her to attend a job related interview which was posted online by her grandson:

Or maybe it’s not a mistake at all.

People starving to death in the UK – on David Cameron’s doorstep
(not satire – it’s the UK today!)
Austerity kills. It killed Mark Wood and it killed David Clapson. Both starved to death as a direct consequence of the coalition government’s austerity programme. Both were vulnerable adults who starved alone, bewildered at being punished by those they thought were helping them.
The two people closest to these victims will share a platform on 27 November in Witney, David Cameron’s constituency. Cathie Wood, the sister of Mark Wood, and Gill Thompson, the sister of David Clapson, will demand to know why their brothers died at the hands of the state. They are determined that other vulnerable people should not share their brothers’ fate, victims of an inhuman political ideology.
“We are sticking to the task. But that doesn’t just mean making difficult decisions on public spending. It also means something more profound. It means building a leaner, more efficient state. We need…

Why I’m not brimming with confidence over Theresa May’s plans to criminalise emotional abuse
Content note: This post discusses emotional abuse
In the latest in a string of policies which sound good and are incredibly cheap to implement, Theresa May will announce plans to put emotional abuse on a par with physical domestic violence. This sounds like nothing to object to, a long-awaited recognition of the seriousness of the coercive dynamics which so often sustain abusive relationships and hit survivors hard.
There is a catch, though, and it’s a catch which means I severely doubt that any perpetrators will find themselves prosecuted for something they have blatantly done: the whole thing hinges on telling the police.
The way the police tend to work is through talking about what happened. You list specific incidents. This happened, and then this happened, and then that happened. Imagine having to do this as a survivor of emotional abuse!
The very clever thing about emotional abuse, the thing that really…

Over Half A Million Trapped In ESA Assessment Stage
With many thanks to Benefits And Work.
Over half a million people are trapped in the assessment phase of employment and support allowance (ESA) whilst waiting for a work capability assessment (WCA) and hundreds of thousands more are dealing with the uncertainty of not knowing when their next assessment will be, a government minister has confirmed.
In answer to a written question, Mark Harper, minister for disabled people, stated that:
“As at 30 September 2014 there were around 580,000 cases awaiting Work Capability Assessments at Atos Healthcare (down by 25% since February). These figures do not include cases where the claimant has yet to return the claimant questionnaire.
“From 1 March, MAXIMUS Health and Human Services Ltd. will take over delivery, initially using elements of the Atos infrastructure in order to ensure a smooth and gradual transition between providers. The priority for MAXIMUS will be to deliver the best service…

Student Movement Sparks Back To Life In Fight For #FreeEducation
A copper gets a paint job in response to the violent police attack
In a further sign that resistance to austerity is sparking back to life, students from across the UK marched in central London yesterday demanding the right to free education. This was the biggest student protest since the spiky demonstrations in 2010 when students smashed their way into the Tory Party headquarters.
As on previous protests, many students were not content to obediently march from A to B and then listen to politicians making boring and insincere speeches. Instead, when the march arrived at Parliament Square many protesters tore down the fences surrounding the square. These were erected after the recent Occupy protests and are intended to prevent any unofficial dissent against government policies outside the Houses of Parliament. So far they havent worked very well.
As hundreds of people occupied the Square, a large group broke away…
